Using stock and zoom video creatively

The new normal has forced everyone to approach business differently. What does this mean when it comes to your video marketing? Although many video shoots can still go ahead safely, many of our collaborators have approached us about making videos from afar. Whether filming interviews over Zoom or utilizing stock footage, there are still ways to produce creative content for your business.

Looking to stand out? Here are our tips:

Use Stock Footage...creatively

The issue with stock footage is just that it looks like...stock footage. How do you customize it to make it fit your brand?

The power of editing

By cropping, adding effects, or paying attention to how you string shots together in editing, you can turn a video made from stock footage into something great. In this video example we used split screen effects to turn stock footage into something creative.

Blend homemade video with stock video

We shot this video during the first phase of the pandemic when we were unable to meet for film shoots. We jumped in as the actors and set up lights against a white wall in our homes. Then, we sourced stock and found footage, overlaying it in our silhouettes. The result was a video that was shot completely from the safety of our homes. Sometimes restrictions are just what you need to get the creative juices flowing.

Use music and voiceover

A stock video can be customized by a unique script and music to set the mood. The same shots paired with a unique voice or music track can make the same video feel completely different, so be mindful of what all of these elements are saying about your brand. In this video our client came to us with a script already ready to go, as well as a list of stock footage shots they wanted to purchase. The resulting video is upbeat and fits their playful, fun, yet professional brand.

Focus on content

Viewers are getting used to seeing videos recorded online in video conferencing platforms like Zoom. Many Youtubers have resorted to making content in this format, and there has even been a successful feature film shot in this way during the pandemic! The reality is that webcam video will never look as nice as something shot with the proper lighting and camera equipment. But, it can still look good, especially if you focus on WHAT you’re filming as opposed to WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. People can be very forgiving of less than perfect looking footage if the content is compelling and answers a question or need they have.

Don’t stop creating

During this time connection is as important as ever, and video is a powerful way to stay connected to your community. The circumstances around your video production might not be perfect, but that doesn’t mean you should stop creating. Whether it’s using stock footage, what you can film at home, or a combination of the two, you can find ways to continue to spread your message.
