How to look professional in video calls

As many of us get used to working from home in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19, video conferencing is becoming more important than ever. But how can you still maintain professionalism while working from your living room?

Here are our top tips on how to stick to business as usual while on those video calls.

Look your best

When working from home it can be tempting to dress casual, but if you can manage to put on some business appropriate clothing you’ll be more in the mindset to work and present yourself better on camera for those video calls. If being in your sweats is just too tempting, at least wear a blazer or dress shirt on top. We won’t tell anyone…

Lighting

Make sure there is ample light in your workspace so that your colleagues can see you. It will also be more flattering. Don’t stand in front of a window or with a strong light source behind you. Window light can overpower your room light, making you look dark or with a distracting halo. If possible position yourself so that your window is in front of you, which will give you a flattering even light across the face.

Think about your background

Our environments say a lot about us as people, and we might not want ou personal lives on full display. Consider taking your video calls in a room with a neutral background. Make sure your family knows you’re on the call so they can remain quiet and don’t disturb you. You definitely don’t want this to happen…

Don’t have a neutral space? You can always add an image as your background so your environment remains hidden.

Video conferencing is a great way to stay in touch with your colleagues and maintain a human connection while working from home. By taking a little extra time to look your best you can ensure you put your best foot forward and stay focused during these challenging times.
